The Soothing Power of Poetry

“And the world cannot be discovered by a journey of miles, no matter how long, but only by a spiritual journey, a journey of one inch…”

I love this quote from Wendell Berry and his reference to the ‘journey of one inch’ reminds me of William Blake’s lines:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour

Both speak of the paradoxical nature of life so beautifully...I guess I’m feeling rather philosophical this evening!

Rumi also offers something similar in the following lines:

I am so small I can barely be seen
How can this great love be inside me?

Look at your eyes. They are small,
but they see enormous things.

I find poetry like this soothing on the days my brain feels frazzled... It’s a way of connecting to my soul and the beauty I can access being here, in this human life...

How do you nourish your soul?
